Which Claude do I use?

· 4 Min Read · By Riley Daniels

For creators who sell to their fans and mostly use AI for captions. Pick one tool and go back to work.

Last checked: 2 October 2026. Prices and plans change. Every claim below has a source at the bottom.

The short answer

Start with Projects. On Claude it is called Projects, on ChatGPT it is also called Projects, and both are free. A Project is a folder that remembers your rules and your files, so you stop pasting the same “this is my voice, this is my pricing” into every new chat. Cowork and Claude Code come later. They do real work on files on your computer, they need a paid plan, and most creators do not need them in month one.

The decision tree

Answer each question. Stop when you hit a tool.

Do you already pay for ChatGPT, or do you like it and want to stay?
  Yes -> use ChatGPT Projects (free on every plan). Done.
  No  -> keep going.

Do you want AI to chat with you, or to do work on your files for you?
  Chat (captions, pricing questions, planning, drafts)
    -> Claude Projects. Free, up to 5 Projects. Done.
  Do work on my files (sort a folder, build a spreadsheet, turn notes into a doc)
    -> keep going.

Are you on a paid Claude plan (Pro, $20 a month) with the desktop app installed?
  No -> start with Claude Projects anyway. Upgrade when the free one feels small.
  Yes -> keep going.

Do you build apps, scripts, or websites?
  No  -> Claude Cowork. Done.
  Yes -> Claude Code. Done.

Who each one is for

Claude Projects. A workspace with its own chats and uploaded files. Put your voice notes, your price list, and your rules in once, then every chat in that Project knows them. Plan: Free gives you 5 Projects. Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly) removes that cap. Pick this if you want better captions and planning without learning anything new.

Claude Cowork. You give Claude a folder on your computer and a task, and it does the task: renames files, builds a spreadsheet from your notes, turns a mess of screenshots into a tidy doc, then hands it back for you to check. Plan: paid only (Pro and up). Needs the Claude desktop app on Mac or Windows. Pick this if you have a folder of real files and a job you keep putting off.

Claude Code. Claude as a builder. It writes and runs code, tests it, and fixes it. Plan: paid only (Pro and up). Pick this if you want a custom tool, a website, or a script and you are fine reading a terminal. Most creators do not need it. If you are not sure, you do not.

Claude Max. From $100 a month. Same tools as Pro with much higher usage. Only worth it if you hit the Pro limits every day.

Where creators usually land

Projects, on whichever app they already have open. That covers captions, a pricing sheet, a weekly plan, and a “what did I post this month” check. Cowork gets picked up when there is a folder of real files and the sorting job is bigger than a chat can handle. Claude Code is for the few who want to build something and are ok with it feeling technical for a week.

Not on Claude? The ChatGPT version

ChatGPT Free. $0. Unlimited text chats, limited uploads and image making, and Projects are included. Pick this if you want to try the Projects idea before paying anyone.

ChatGPT Plus. $20 a month. More uploads, the stronger models, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and bigger limits on Projects. Pick this if Free keeps stopping you mid-task.

ChatGPT Projects. The same idea as Claude Projects: one folder with its own files, chats, and instructions. Available on Free, Plus, and Pro. Project instructions override your general custom instructions inside that Project, which is the part that makes it useful: one Project for captions, one for pricing, each with its own rules.

ChatGPT Pro. From $100 a month. Only if you are already paying for Plus and running out.

There is no ChatGPT equivalent of Cowork or Claude Code in this post. If you want the “do work on my files” setup, that is the point where Claude pulls ahead for now.
